In vitro and in vivo efficacy of sulfo‐carrabiose, a sugar‐based cosmetic ingredient with anti‐cellulite properties

Abstract: Most of adult women exhibit cellulite on the hips, buttock and thighs. Although extracellular matrix and lymphatic system disorders can increase its appearance, cellulite basically results from an excessive fat storage in the adipose tissue which exerts considerable pressure on the surrounding skin tissue and creates a dimpled irregular appearance. Caffeine, the most widely used anti-cellulite ingredient, favours fat break-down by inhibiting the phosphodiesterase enzyme and encouraging a high intracellular lev… Show more

“…For example, caffeine has been used as an active compound in anticellulite products because it prevents excessive accumulation of fat in cells [7,8]. It stimulates the degradation of fats during lipolysis through inhibition of the phosphodiesterase activity [9]. In addition, caffeine has potent antioxidant properties.…”

“…This alkaloid also blocks α adrenergic receptors, preventing an excessive accumulation of fats, and speeds up the lipolysis process [27,28]. Caffeine also stimulates lipolysis via the inhibition of PDE activity and by increasing the cAMP levels in adipocytes [29]. Then caffeine activates HSL, which leads to the degradation of triglycerides in the lipolysis process, and takes part in the reduction of cellulite (fig.…”

“…Além disso, os dois resultados foram significativos versus o placebo (P <0,05). Os autores concluíram que esse tipo de carragenana pode ser promissor no tratamento da celulite e adiposidade, e que em conjunto com a caféina pode promover ainda mais a eficácia da formulação (Vogelgesang, Bonnet, Godard, Sohm & Perrier, 2011).…”
