In vitroantioxidant and antitumor activities of six selected plants used in the Traditional Arabic Palestinian herbal medicine

Abstract: The results suggest that the investigated plants have shown varied antioxidant capacities which were strongly correlated with their contents of phenolics. Accordingly, this study proposes that the therapeutic benefit of these plants can be, at least in part, attributed to its potential inhibition of oxidative processes.

“…Reactive oxygen species have a wide variety of pathological effects such as carcinogenesis, DNA damage and cell degeneration related to aging. It has been suggested in many in vitro and in vivo studies that dietary phenolic acids could protect and also inhibit the oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and exposing antioxidant capacity [16][17][18][19] . The inhibition of carcinogenesis by phenolic compounds has revealed oncoprotective properties beneficial for the use of nutraceuticals in cancer therapy.…”

“…There are 3 studies on antioxidant activity of different extracts obtained from C.capitatus [4,6,7]. According to the work of Mokhtar and co-worker, ethyl acetate extract (IC 50 1.50 µg/mL) from C. capitatus showed stronger DPPH radical scavenging activity than diethyl ether extract (IC 50 1.92 µg/mL) [6].…”
