In Vitro Flower Induction from Shoots Regenerated from Cultured Axillary Buds of Endangered Medicinal Herb Swertia chirayita H. Karst.

Abstract: In vitro flowering and effective micropropagation protocol were studied in Swertia chirayita, an important medicinal plant using axillary bud explants. The Murashige and Skoog's medium (MS) supplemented with benzyl amino purine (BAP) 1.0 mg L−1 and adenine sulfate 70.0 mg L−1 was found optimum for production of multiple shoots. In the present study, incubation of flowering cultures on BAP supplemented medium (during shoot multiplication) was found necessary for flowering (6 weeks). However, concentrations of a… Show more

“…In vitro flowering of valuable medicinal plants is divided on the basis of its available floral organs as follows. Whereas other factors such as optimum temperature, relative humidity, and nature of carbon source also play important roles in the formation of reproductive buds [52]. Flower cultures have not been a subject of large-scale experimentation.…”

“…Globally the floriculture market has been estimated to be worth about US $60 billion [1]. Flower formation in whole plants grown in the glasshouse or under field conditions (herewith referred to as the in vivo conditions) are under the complex control of many factors [2]. In vitro flowering may be useful to aid gaining a better understanding of regulation of flowering as this phenomenon could occur in many different plants under highly controlled in vitro environmental conditions [3]- [7].…”

“…Studies on in vitro flowering are not only of academic interest but also of applied interest [2]. For example, in vitro flowering could be used to aid plant breeding [8].…”
