In Vitro Selective Combinatory Effect of Ciprofloxacin with Nitroxoline, Sanguinarine, and Zinc Pyrithione against Diarrhea-Causing and Gut Beneficial Bacteria

Abstract: Diarrheal infections, which are commonly treated by antibiotics, are still responsible for over 4 to 5 million cases of human deaths annually. Moreover, the rising incidence of antibiotic resistance and its negative effect on beneficial bacteria (e.g., Bifidobacteria ) of the gut microbial community are another problem.

“…Streptomycin exerts inhibitory effects on gram-negative bacteria through inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial protein. The secretion of other bacteriocins namely phenyllactic acid, Janthitrem G, 13-demethyl tacrolimus, medinoside E, and tertonasin showed antimicrobial activity against pathogenic Escherichia coli CCTCC25922, Salmonella CVCC1880, and Staphylococcus aureus [ 43 45 ].…”

“…The findings showed a bacteriostatic effect against the mentioned microorganisms but did not prove a bactericidal effect. Interestingly, an antagonistic effect against bifidobacteria (B. adolescentis, B. animalis, and B. breve) was found, which suggests a beneficial effect on the intestines during treatment [291]. Sanguinarine exhibits activity against MRSA and E. coli microorganisms and has antiinflammatory, anti-cancer, and antimicrobial properties.…”

“…Sanguinarine, a benzylisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from the plant Sanguinaria canadensis [ 28 ], is commonly used in mouthwash and toothpaste to treat and prevent gingivitis and related inflammatory conditions [ 29 , 30 ]. It has demonstrated a synergistic effect against diarrhoeic pathogens when combined with ciprofloxacin [ 31 ]. Similarly, nitroxoline is a drug used to treat infectious and inflammatory urogenital tract diseases [ 32 ] and has showed synergism when used in combination with ciprofloxacin against strains of diarrhoea-causing bacteria [ 31 ].…”

Similarly, nitroxoline is a drug used to treat infectious and inflammatory urogenital tract diseases [ 32 ] and has showed synergism when used in combination with ciprofloxacin against strains of diarrhoea-causing bacteria [ 31 ]. This agent is a derivative of 8-hydroxyquinoline, which is a compound previously detected in the plant Centaurea diffusa [ 33 ].…”
