In Vivo Study of the Efficacy of the Aromatic Water of Zataria multiflora on Hydatid Cysts

Abstract: c Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were employed to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) from aromatic water (AW) of Zataria multiflora. Thymol (66.9%), carvacrol (15.2%), and carvone (7.3%) were found to be the major EO constituents. Eighty laboratory BALB/c mice were infected intraperitoneally by injection of 1,500 viable protoscolices and were divided into prevention (40 mice) and therapeutic (40 mice) groups. To prove the preventive effect of … Show more

“…Even though interesting advances have been reported in the in vitro or in vivo application of several essential oils or its components on E. granulosus (Maggiore et al, 2012;Moazeni et al, 2014;Pensel et al, 2014), little is known regarding E. multilocularis.…”

“…All mice (from groups , and were euthanized at the end the experiment (after 6 months) by Ether, and a necropsy was carried out immediately. At necropsy, the body cavity was opened, and the internal organs were observed for hydatid cysts (11).…”

“…Formalin, hypertonic saline, cetrimide, chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide and ethyl alcohol are some of the compounds used as scolicidal, but all of these agents are concentration dependent and their degree of dilution in the cyst contents is quite unpredictable (10), Also, they have different adverse effects such as liver necrosis and biliary tract fibrosis (2). Thus, it is indispensable to develop new scolicidal materials with more efficacious and low adverse effects, which can be implemented during surgery (11). Considerable evidence has demonstrated that some plant derived products (PDPs) can be useful as scolicidal (12).…”

“…The larval stage of E. granulosus causes cystic echinococcosis (CE) (hydatid disease) in humans and livestock that represents an important zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Human infection usually occurs after ingestion of infective eggs passed in the feces from dogs via direct contact or through environmental contamination . CE is a chronic disease with complex nature and may be asymptomatic, severe or even a fatal infection in human beings .…”
