Iris yellow spot virus (Tospovirus: Bunyaviridae): from obscurity to research priority

Abstract: Resistant varieties are not available, but a limited number of accessions with field tolerance have been identified. Integrated disease management tactics, including sanitation, crop rotation, thrips management, maintenance of optimal plant vigour, soil fertility, irrigation and physical separation of bulb and seed crops, can mitigate the effect of the disease. “…In Asia, a number of new potential threats to vegetable crops have been recently discovered infecting tomato, sweet pepper (50,110,150), and ornamental crops (36); particularly worrisome is the recent first report of TSWV in India (97). Meanwhile, Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) belonging to the Euro-Asian clade has been spreading in Europe (5). Similarly, Tomato yellow ring virus (TYRV), which was originally found only in the Middle East on tomato, potato, and some ornamental crops, has recently been reported to be present in Poland and Kenya (9,151).…”

“…Among insects, onion thrips ( Thrips tabaci L.) causes major damage by reducing photosynthetic activity, making an entry point for pathogens and as a vector for IYSV (Bag et al. ). While some onion growers utilize biological and cultural control measures to manage thrips, the majority rely upon insecticides.…”

“…Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) (Tospovirus: Bunyaviridae) is found throughout most onion-growing regions of the world and is considered one of the most damaging viruses to attack onion crops (Gent et al 2006;Bag et al 2015). The virus is transmitted in a persistent, propagative manner by thrips vectors, similar to other tospoviruses (Gent et al 2006), with onion thrips ( rips tabaci) considered the main vector.…”
