“…These studies complement the growing literature assessing the efficacy of walls against changing siege tactics (Scholl 2015; Jonasch 2020; Eisenberg and Khamisy 2021). Two additional questions, which will be revisited below, concern the labour costs of building impressive walls and gates (Taşdelen and Baz 2018;Bessac and Müth 2020;Fachard et al 2020;Boswinkel 2021) as well as the socio-political implications of their patronage and maintenance (Özer and Taşkıran 2018;Müth 2020).…”

“…Architectural energetics is an important new area occupying researchers of both prehistoric and Classical architecture (Brysbaert et al 2018;40 entries). In the past few years, models for estimating labour input have led to new research on: monumental Mycenaean constructions (Turner 2020;Boswinkel 2021;Pakkanen and Brysbaert 2021); Archaic cities (Fitzsimons 2017) and tiled roofs (Sapirstein 2021b); and Classical temples (Marginesu 2020;Patay-Horváth 2020), quarries (Tommaso and Scardozzi 2016), houses (Lancaster 2021), and fortifications (Bessac and Müth 2020;Fachard et al 2020). Epigraphists, too, have contributed to this discourse through the study of building accounts, including chapters in an edited volume (Harter-Uibopuu 2022), a study of seasonality in ancient constructions (Carusi 2021), and reassessments of records at Epidauros (Kritzas and Prignitz 2020; Lambrinoudakis and Prignitz 2020), Didyma (Prignitz 2019), and Delphi (Lamouille 2020).…”
