“…There is evidence of the potential benefit of some strains and species of probiotics for a variety of indications 38 most recently that proposed for species of L. plantarum as candidates to reduce cholesterol levels. 64 A summary of a selection of probiotic species that have been reported efficacious in several specific health indications is presented in Table 2. The typical doses in this select group of studies varied between 10 10 and 10 11 CFU per dose administered.…”

“…LAB are reported to have intrinsic and acquired resistances to many classes of antibiotics, only some of which are known to be transferable (Nawaz et al, 2011;Zhang et al, 2011). To resolve the discrepancies in MIC between the present study and a previous report (Bosch et al, 2014), a more comprehensive genomic mining strategy was utilized. While the EFSA microbiological cut-off value was not exceeded for chloramphenicol in any of the strains, a conserved cat gene was annotated and no other known antibiotic resistance genes were identified.…”

“…The three AB-LIFE ® strains, L. plantarum CECT 7527, 7528, and 7529, have been reported to exhibit bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity and cholesterol lowering ability in vitro (Bosch et al, 2014). BSHs are believed to promote bacterial colonization of the lower small intestine, though the activity varies depending on the composition of the individual microbiota, and may vary between bacterial genera (Ridlon et al, 2006).…”
