Lactobacillus reuteri therapy to reduce side‐effects during anti‐Helicobacter pylori treatment in children: a randomized placebo controlled trial

Abstract: SUMMARY BackgroundHelicobacter pylori eradication fails in about 25-30% of children, particularly because of the occurrence of resistance to antibiotics and side-effects.

“…Of all trials, sequence generation (method of randomization) was clear and appropriate. Concealment was unclear in 7 studies (12,13,16,(23)(24)(25)(26), which was performed by using appropriately sealed boxes in 2 studies (14,27). Knowledge of the assigned intervention may impact on behavioral outcomes (such as number of clinic visits) but not on physiological outcomes.…”

“…In the present study, the positive rate of bacteria in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group, revealing S. boulardii can inhibit bacterial overgrowth and regulate flora disturbance to maintain the balance of micro-ecological system in the stomach. Bacterial resistance and patient compliance are the two major factors that contributed to the eradication rate of HP (Lionetti et al, 2006) and the rate decreases with tolerance increase by the heavy use of antibiotics. In recent years, substantial evidence shows that probiotics may have beneficial effects in eradicating HP (Yang, 2006), reducing side-effects of antibiotics, and improving patient compliance.…”

“…A short term daily ingestion of L. reuteri delivered by drinking straw or tablets reduced the levels of salivary Streptococci in young adults (Caglar et al 2006). The L. reuteri supplementation during and after Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy significantly reduced the frequency and intensity of antibiotic associated side effects (Lionetti et al 2006). The administration of L. reuteri significantly decreased UBT (Urea Breath Test) values in H. pylori positive subjects, demonstrating that L. reuteri suppressed H. pylori density (Imase et al 2005).…”
