Objective To determine the seroprevalence of Leptospira immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies and its association with the characteristics of the study population from the northern Mexican city of Durango, Mexico. Methods Through a cross-sectional study design, inhabitants of Durango City, Mexico were surveyed between June 2018 and November 2018. Serum samples from the subjects were analysed for anti- Leptospira IgG and IgM antibodies using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Sociodemographic, clinical, behavioural and housing characteristics were recorded. Data were analysed by bivariate and multivariate analyses. Results The study enrolled 413 people, of which 124 (30.0%) and 137 (33.2%) were positive for anti- Leptospira IgG antibodies and anti- Leptospira IgM antibodies, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that Leptospira seropositivity was associated with professional occupation, alcohol consumption, ill clinical status, memory impairment and a history of surgery. Conclusions This is the first study to report the seroepidemiology of Leptospira infection in an urban general population in the north of Mexico. The seroprevalence of Leptospira infection found was higher than those previously reported in Mexican studies.

COVID-19 is a zoonotic coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Its fast spreading by aerosol transmission has made it a highly contagious disease, causing the most recent 2020 pandemic. Although it mainly affects the respiratory system, atypical forms of the disease have been described, including developing an undifferentiated febrile illness without respiratory symptoms, that can represent a diagnostic challenge, mainly in tropical areas where several zoonotic febrile diseases are circulating. Thus, despite the broad clinical spectrum of COVID-19, in the tropics, other zoonotic etiologies should always be considered as differential diagnoses. According to our case reports review, eight different zoonotic febrile diseases misdiag-nosed as COVID-19 have been reported in the available scientific literature of four databases. These were only suspected due to the epidemiological history. Thus, making a complete and detailed clinical history of a febrile patient in the tropics is essential to suspect the etiology and request the necessary confirmatory tests. Therefore, COVID-19 must be included as a differential diagnosis of undifferentiated febrile illness in the tropics, but other zoonotic infectious diseases must not be ruled out.

El presente artículo busca describir las condiciones de salud y trabajo de los recicladores a nivel mundial, desde el modelo de condiciones de trabajo de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en PubMed, Taylor and Francis, Science Direct y SAGE de artículos publicados entre los años 1999 al 2019. Para el proceso de depuración de artículos se utilizó el gestor bibliográfico Mendeley. Se obtuvieron 857 registros, de los cuales 88 cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. La mayoría de los estudios eran de casos y controles, con la aplicación de cuestionarios, entrevistas, encuestas y discusiones de grupos focales. Las condiciones intralaborales de los recicladores se relacionan principalmente con la exposición a agentes químicos y biológicos; las condiciones extralaborales que más influyen en el desempeño laboral están asociadas con su situación económica, familiar, vivienda y relación con el entorno. Las condiciones individuales que más inciden en la salud y el trabajo de los recicladores están asociadas con el sexo, la edad y la escolaridad. Desde el abordaje del modelo de condiciones de trabajo esta revisión de literatura identificó y explicó los agentes de riesgo y los efectos en la salud de recicladores como consecuencia de su exposición a entornos de trabajo inseguros y peligrosos.
