Ligictaluridus Beverley-Burton, 1984 (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae) from catfishes (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae) in North America with redescriptions of the type species, Ligictaluridus pricei (Mueller, 1936), and three others

Abstract: Ligictaluridus Beverley-Burton, 1984 has been proposed for ancyrocephalid monogeneans found on North American catfishes (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae). The genus is characterized by the following: penis curved, sclerotized, tubular; accessory piece with proximally articulating base and distally projecting limb of varying size and shape; dorsal and ventral hamuli with slender, curving shaft, dorsal hamuli smaller than ventral; dorsal and ventral transverse bars bowed with flange projecting medianly; larval hooks o… Show more

“…2N), Hargis (1953) probably measured a bent one. Until now, the vagina has not been described clearly, because it is obscured by well-developed vitellaria (Klassen and Beverley-Burton 1985a). Based on the specimens stained in Heidenhain's iron hematoxylin, the present study has revealed that it runs between the vas deferens and the left intestinal caecum ( Fig.…”

“…At present, the genus Ligictaluridus consists of six valid species (Klassen and Beverley-Burton 1985a, b): L. bychowskyi (Price and Mura, 1969), L. floridanus (Mueller, 1936), L. mirabilis (Mueller, 1937), L. monticellii (Cognetti de Martiis, 1924), L. posthon Klassen, Beverley-Burton and Dechtiar, 1985, and L. pricei. Ligictaluridus pricei is readily separated from L. monticellii by the presence of a deep root (Klassen and Beverley-Burton 1985a) on each hamulus. The distal limb of the accessory piece has a single terminal projection in L. pricei, while those of L. floridanus and L. mirabilis have two and four terminal projections, respectively (Mueller 1936(Mueller , 1937Klassen and Beverley-Burton 1985a). Unlike L. pricei, L. bychowskyi has a tapered penis (Price and Mura 1969;Klassen and Beverley-Burton 1985a).…”

“…The olfactory chamber of fishes is commonly reported as a site of infection for a variety of tissue grazing parasites, including copepods and monogeneans (Klassen & Beverley-Burton 1985;Whittington & Kearn 1992;Ho & Lin 2003;McElwain et al 2010). However, there are relatively few studies that have examined the potential pathology and impact of such parasites on the action of peripheral olfactory nerves embedded within this organ.…”
