LnIs a Key Regulator of Leaflet Shape and Number of Seeds per Pod in Soybean

Abstract: Narrow leaflet soybean (Glycine max) varieties tend to have more seeds per pod than broad leaflet varieties. Narrow leaflet in soybean is conferred by a single recessive gene, ln. Here, we show that the transition from broad (Ln) to narrow leaflet (ln) is associated with an amino acid substitution in the EAR motif encoded by a gene (designated Gm-JAGGED1) homologous to Arabidopsis JAGGED (JAG) that regulates lateral organ development and the variant exerts a pleiotropic effect on fruit patterning. The genomic … Show more

“…Similarly, we found regional differentiation in the Ln gene, which is responsible for soybean leaf shape and the four-seed pod 32,33 , and the T locus, which regulates pubescence color 34,35 , that were not detected in the screening for domestication and improvement selection described above. The mutant Ln allele was mainly distributed in northeastern China and northern China (Fig.…”

“…A study conducted by You et al (1995) in Southern China revealed that the lower number of soybean seeds per pod might be associated with the broader leaflet shape. Similarly, Jeong et al (2012) also found that narrow leaflet soybean varieties apparently had more seeds per pod than those of broad leaflet varieties. This study has revealed a potential way to improve seed yield.…”

“…Ln has been mapped to a genomic region that includes a single gene – Gm-JAG1 – a homolog of the A. thaliana zinc-finger gene JAGGED . A single amino acid substitution (D9H) in the transcriptional repressor EAR motif of Gm-JAG1 is likely to be the causal ln mutation, rendering Gm-JAG1 non- or hypofunctional (Jeong et al, 2012). In addition to altering leaf morphology, the ln mutation affects the number of seeds per fruit (You et al, 1995; Dinkins et al, 2002).…”
