meta‐Cyanobenzyl substituted benzimidazolium salts: Synthesis, characterization, crystal structure and carbonic anhydrase, α‐glycosidase, butyrylcholinesterase, and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory properties

Abstract: meta-Cyanobenzyl-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors were synthesized by the reaction of a series of N-(alkyl)benzimidazolium with 3-bromomethyl-benzonitrile. These benzimidazolium salts were characterized by using H NMR, C NMR, FTIR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis techniques. The molecular and crystal structures of 2f and 2g complexes were obtained by using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. The derivatives of these novel NHC precursors were effective inhibitors of α-glycosidase… Show more

“…Diabetes mellitus (DM) is well defined as a main health difficulty associated with enhanced mortality and morbidity and wide health care costs. α‐Glycosidase (α‐Gly) enzyme, present in the epithelial mucosa cells of small intestine tissue breaks glycosidic chain bonds in complex carbohydrate to release absorbable monosaccharide molecules . Inhibition act of α‐Gly enzyme in the digestive tract delays carbohydrate molecules digestion and prolongs the overall carbohydrate digestion period, causing a decrement in the rate of glucose absorption and consequently blunting the postprandial blood glucose and insulin levels …”

“…Diabetes is regarded as a key health problem around the world. Diabetes is associated with high blood glucose, which can cause other health issues, such as weakness, nephropathy retinopathy, neuropathy, cardiovascular disease, gangrene, high blood pressure, and other dysfunctions . α‐GIs can be a serious factor for therapy in T2DM .…”

“…One of the mechanisms to manage the disturbance is through inhibition of carbohydrate enzymes such as α‐glycosidase and α‐amylase. Inhibiting these key enzymes will result in slower absorption of sugars during digestion …”
