Mycobacterium chimaera Disseminated Infection

Abstract: The incidence and prevalence of nontuberculous mycobacterial disease is increasing due to enhanced clinician awareness and improved detection methods. The species identification using molecular microbiology techniques allows a better understanding of the differences in pathogenicity and treatment response. A 57-year-old man with a history of B-cell lymphoma in remission was transferred from the hematology department due to fever of unknown origin, night sweats and asthenia. The empirical antibiotic therapy was… Show more

“…Apart from systemic infection caused by contaminated HCDs, only two cases developed disseminated M. chimaera infection attributable to their immunodeficiency (Table 1 ) [ 6 , 7 ]. One patient received prednisolone and hydroxychloroquine for systemic lupus erythematosus, and the other patient underwent chemotherapy for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.…”

“…The clinical presentations of M. chimaera infection include pulmonary diseases and extrapulmonary manifestations, including surgical site infection, prosthetic valve endocarditis, vascular graft infection, arthritis, osteomyelitis, and disseminated infection [ 5 ]. Although disseminated MAC infection disproportionally affects immunocompromised hosts, disseminated M. chimaera infection has more commonly occurred in patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery and rarely been reported in patients with immune dysfunction [ 4 , 6 , 7 ]. We herein report the first case of adult-onset immunodeficiency due to AIGAs complicated with disseminated M. chimaera infection.…”

“…In another article, an immunocompromised individual with lymphoma presented with the disseminated disease and received multidrug therapy. Lymphoma treatment was modified due to M. chimaera symptoms, disease progression was observed, and this patient died [ 3 ].…”

“…Moreover, since 2013, some cases in immunocompromised individuals and patients with underlying lung diseases like tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or interstitial lung diseases have been described [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Furthermore, silicosis is a disease that can predispose to mycobacterial infection and is a pneumoconiosis caused by the inhalation of crystalline silicon dioxide.…”
