Mycobacterium haemophilumin Immunocompromised Patients

Abstract: Mycobacterium haemophilum, a recently described pathogen, can cause an array of symptoms in immunocompromised patients. To date, 90 patients with this infection have been described worldwide. We report our institution's experience with 23 patients who were treated from 1990 through 2000. Fourteen patients had undergone bone marrow transplantation, 5 were infected with human immunodeficiency virus, 3 had hematologic malignancies, and 1 had no known underlying immunosuppression. “…In addition, correlation between in vitro susceptibility test results and treatment response has not been clearly defined [16][17][18]. However, most of the published literature agree that patients should be given a multidrug regimen that include some combination of clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and one of the rifamycins for a minimum duration of 12 months [18].…”

“…Infections caused by M. haemophilum will be reported with greater frequency as a result of heightened awareness among physicians and clinical microbiologists and the growing number of immunocompromised patients [14]. As with many emerging infections in immunosuppressed patients, varied clinical presentations will likely be reported.…”
