N‐Acetylcysteine an Allium Plant Compound Improves High‐Sucrose Diet‐Induced Obesity and Related Effects

Abstract: This study was designed to determine whether N-acetylcysteine (NAC, C5H9–NO3S), a compound from Allium species may be used as a complementary therapeutic agent, to inhibit high-sucrose induced-obesity and its effects on glucose tolerance, in vivo low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-oxidation and serum oxidative stress in rats. Initially, 24 male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: controls receiving standard chow (C, n = 6) and those receiving high-sucrose diet (HS, n = 18). After 22 days, (HS) group was divid… Show more

“…Increasingly experimental and clinical data suggest that antioxidants have a beneficial role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance (Souza et al, 2008;Masha et al, 2009). N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a cysteine donor, is of interest for many recent researchers because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatopreventive effects.…”

“…Recently, the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been shown to exert a protective effect against insulin resistance and diabetes in rats (Haber et al, 2003;Song et al, 2005;Diniz et al, 2006;Souza et al, 2008). In these studies, NAC supplementation prevented hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance associated with the preservation of glucose-induced insulin secretion and improved insulin sensitivity.…”
