N,N′-Bis(3-bromobenzylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine

Abstract: The molecule of the title Schiff base compound, C16H14Br2N2, lies across a crystallographic inversion centre. The C=N bond adopts a trans configuration. The imino group is coplanar with the benzene ring. Within the molecule, the planar units are parallel, but extend in opposite directions from the dimethylene bridge. The interesting feature of the structure is the weak Br⋯Br interaction [3.7501 (2) Å] linking the molecules into chains along the c axis. These chains are stacked along the b axis.

“…Many Schiff base complexes have been structurally characterized, but in comparison only a relatively small number of free Schiff bases have been described (Calligaris & Randaccio, 1987). As an extension of our work (Fun et al, 2008a(Fun et al, , 2008b(Fun et al, , 2008c(Fun et al, , 2008d on the structural characterization of Schiff base compounds, the title compound (I), (Fig. 1), is reported here.…”

“…Due to the p-donor character induced by the coordinated chloride ligand, the Re-C linkages trans to the Re-Cl linkages are slightly longer than those trans to the Re-N linkages. The C=N bond distance values in the complexes are slightly longer than those observed in free Schiff base ligands [28][29][30]. As commonly observed in previously characterized Re(I)-tricarbonyl diimine systems [31][32][33], the N-Re-N bond angles are found to be less than 90°as required by the steric requirements of chelating ligands.…”

“…Hence, the title compound should be stable enough to resist the metathesis of the C=N bonds. Many bisdentate Schiff base compounds have been structurally characterized (Fun et al, 2008a;Fun et al, 2008b;Kia et al, 2009), but only a relatively small number of bisoxime compounds have had their X-ray structures reported (Shi et al, 2007;Ren et al, 2008). As an extension of our work (Ding et al, 2009;Dong et al, 2008a) on the structural characterization of bisoxime compounds, the title compound, is reported here (Fig.…”
