Perichaena longipes, a new myxomycete from the Neotropics

Abstract: Abstract:A new species of myxomycete, Perichaena longipes, is described from 56 specimens of fruiting bodies that appeared in moist chamber cultures prepared with samples of decaying plant materials collected in Panama, Costa Rica and Brazil. This new species is distinguished from the morphologically similar species P. pedata on the basis of the much longer stipe, lighter peridium and the unique ornamentation of the capillitium. The nuc 18S ribosomal DNA sequences obtained from four specimens of P. longipes su… Show more

“…On the other hand, M. floripara has solitary fructifications, and this applies as well to a form of M. vesparium which shows a different partial 18S rDNA sequence (Feng and Schnittler 2017). In 18S rDNA phylogenies species traditionally recognized within Metatrichia branch within those of the genus Trichia Fiore-Donno et al 2013, Walker et al 2015.…”

“…2, 11 (1817) This paraphyletic genus is currently underrepresented in molecular investigations. At least some species show affinities to Trichia (e.g., P. longipes,Walker et al 2015), while others may form a separate genus, sister to Trichia (P. corticalis, P. depressa and P. luteola, Fiore-Donno et al 2013).…”

“…Together these eight taxa represent over 50% of the total abundance. At least one of the species recovered, Perichaena longipes, was new to science and has been formally described (Walker et al 2015a). In all, 34 of the species recorded had not been reported previously to occur in the Republic of Panama, bringing the list of species records for the country to 151 (according to lists published by Piepenbring (2006) and the Myxotropic web site [www.myxotropic.org, accessed on 12-1-2015]) (Table S3).…”
