Phakopsora pachyrhizi, the causal agent of Asian soybean rust

Abstract: At the beginning of the disease, small, tan-coloured lesions, restricted by leaf veins, can be observed on infected soybean leaves. Lesions enlarge and, 5-8 days after initial infection, rust pustules (uredia, syn. uredinia) become visible. Uredia develop more frequently in lesions on the lower surface of the leaf than on the upper surface. The uredia open with a round ostiole through which uredospores are released.

“…However these data have been generated under laboratory conditions and field test have not been performed yet. It seems questionable, therefore, whether biological control could substitute chemical disease control or substantially contribute to its effectiveness (Goellner et al, 2010). Since the source for the initial P. pachyrhizi inoculum at the start of the growing season comes from the immigrant weed kudzu, reducing the density of this weed host may help.…”

“…In Brazil, ASR was first reported in 2001 in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Yorinori and Lazzarotto, 2004). Due to the rapid dispersal of its spores by wind and increased human mobility, ASR is currently found in all soybean-producing areas in Brazil (Freire et al, 2008;Goellner et al, 2010).…”

“…In general, "TAN" lesions have two to five uredias at lesion, whereas "RB" lesions have zero to two. There is also an immunity with flecks reaction ("IF"), in which no macroscopic symptoms of the disease are observed (Goellner et al, 2010).…”
