“…Only in Planothidium do we see a similar structure, where there are multiseriate striae that are the same in raphe and raphless valves, with no more than five rows of areolae. Presence of cavum and sinus in Planothidium (Jahn et al 2017) distinguishes this genus easily from Platebaikalia gen. nov.…”

“…Presence of cavum in this species, like the sinus in the previously-mentioned P. strelnikovae demonstrates that these morphological features arose many times in different lineage of monoraphid diatoms. Presence of sinus or cavum is important feature for delimitation of two independent groups in the genus Planothidium (Jahn et al 2017). In many cases a sinus or cavum is present in rapheless valves only, but in the genus Gliwiczia Kulikovskiy, Lange-Bertalot & Witkowski a cavum is present on both valves (Kulikovskiy et al 2013).…”

“…Only a few studies (e.g. Rovira 2013;Trobajo et al 2013;Kelly et al 2015, for the Nitzschia inconspicua Grunow species complex , Jahn et al 2017 for the Planothidium lanceolatum group) follow the precepts of integrative taxonomy which aims to delimit species on sets of different criteria such as morphology, DNA, physiology, ecology and biogeography (Dayrat 2005). This should prompt reconsideration of the boundaries of many poorly delimited diatom species and, potentially, enhance their value for ecological assessment.…”

“…The genus was separated from Achnanthes Bory (1822: 79) based on thick bito multiseriate striae interrupted unilaterally by a "horseshoe" depression on the SV (Round & Bukhtiyarova 1996). Recent molecular analysis of freshwater Planothidium species showed that the shape of the depression on the SV (i.e., a single sinus vs a double cavum with a hood) and the striae ultrastructure are important taxonomic features (Jahn et al 2017). Indeed, scanning electron microscope (SEM) is needed to observe these highly variable structures, particularly striae.…”

“…Currently, there are 98 taxonomically accepted Planothidium species and infraspecific names (Guiry & Guiry 2019), 24 of which are listed and 11 pictured in The Diatoms of North America (Spaulding et al 2008). The challenging taxonomy of the genus has been significantly improved lately by reinvestigating type materials with SEM and a more precise defining of new species from freshwaters worldwide (i.e., Novis et al 2012, Potapova 2012, Alvarez-Blanco & Blanco 2013, Bąk & Lange-Bertalot 2014, Jahn et al 2017.…”
