Porcine circovirus 3 in North and South America: Epidemiology and genetic diversity

Abstract: Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3) is a recently discovered virus that has been detected in the swine population worldwide. PCV3 infection has been associated with several signs, but its pathogenicity is currently uncertain. This review article aimed to analyse the PCV3 strains that circulate in different countries in North and South America. We demonstrated the main regions of polymorphisms in the capsid protein structure. Furthermore, we found that PCV3 has at least six different lineages circulating in the America… Show more

“…This supports the statement of genetic stability and low mutation rates of PCV3 (Arruda et al, 2019;Assao, Santos, Pereira, et al, 2021;Qi et al, 2019). All 44 Canadian sequences in this study were classified into clade 1 (PCV3a) along with included reference strains (Figure 1), which strengthens the hypothesis that clade 2 (PCV3b) including only two sequences is considered to be either recently emerged variants or the last descendant of previously circulating genotypes (Franzo et al, 2020).…”

“…protein and ORF3 encoding a protein with unknown functions (Assao, Santos, Pereira, et al, 2021;Klaumann et al, 2018;Palinski et al, 2017;Qi et al, 2019). The cap protein is considered to be the major structural protein, which determines the antigenic properties of the virus, showing only approximately 37% amino acid sequence identity to that of PCV2 (Nawagitgul et al, 2000;Palinski et al, 2017).…”

“…Of note, co-infections of PCV4 with other PCV are common in swine herds. PCV2 causes PMWS and PDNS [ 1 ], and PCV3 may be associated with PDNS and reproductive failure [ 2 , 28 ]. Co-infections of PCV4 with PCV2, PCV3, or both, have been described in pigs with clinical signs of PMWS, PDNS and reproductive failure [ 4 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…Porcine circovirus type 3 was first discovered in 2015, and since then, it has been found in many countries, including Asia, America, and Europe ( Ha et al, 2020 ; Saporiti et al, 2020 ; Assao et al, 2021 ). However, only a few research data have focused on the phylogeographic distribution and spread of PCV3 ( Arruda et al, 2019 ; Chen et al, 2019 ; Franzo et al, 2019b ; Jiang et al, 2019 ).…”
