Primula persimilis sp. nov. (Primulaceae) from Sichuan, China

Abstract: A new species of Primulaceae, Primula persimilis G. Hao, C.M. Hu & Y. Xu, from Sichuan, China, is described and illustrated. In general morphology it is allied to the species of P. sect. Monocarpicae, characterized by the presence of multi‐cellular hairs, the distinctly petiolate leaves, a campanulate calyx, and a globose or cylindrical capsule with valvate dehiscence. The new species superficially resembles P. tsiangii W.W. Smith, but can be distinguished by its white flowers, longer calyx lobes, and cylindri… Show more

“…During the last decade, some newly published Primula species from the adjacent areas were also found within Guizhou, such as P. pelargoniifolia G.Hao, C.M.Hu & Z.Y. Liu ( Xu et al 2014b ), P. persimilis G.Hao, C.M.Hu & Y.Xu ( Xu et al 2016b ) and P. centellifolia G.Hao, C.M.Hu & Y.Xu ( Xu et al 2017 ). Recently, a newly described species, namely Primula chishuiensis C.M.Hu, G.Hao & Y.Xu ( Xu et al 2022b ) was reported from Guizhou.…”

“…Most of the species occur in temperate and alpine regions of the Northern Hemisphere, e.g., ca. 75% of the total species are found in the Sino–Himalayan region ( Hu 1994 ; Richards 2002 ). With more than 300 reported species, China has the highest diversity in Primula ; most of these species are distributed mainly in the southwestern part (Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet), and the range from the Himalaya–Hengduan mountain chains is the modern diversity center of the genus ( Hu 1994 ; Hu and Kelso 1996 ; Richards 2002 ).…”

“…The Primula sect. Petiolares Pax is one of the largest sections in Primula ; more than 60 species of this section are now recognized worldwide ( Hu 1994 ; Hu and Kelso 1996 ; Richards 2002 ; Hu and Geng 2003 ; Li and Hu 2009 ; Rankin 2010 ; Hu and Hao 2011 ; Xu et al 2014 , 2016 , 2022 ; Ju et al 2018 ; Yuan et al 2018 ; Wei et al 2022 ; Xu et al 2022 ; Zhang et al 2023 ), and are well represented in the Himalaya–Hengduan mountains, with only a few members extending into Kashmir, central China, and some other regions ( Hu 1990 ; Hu and Kelso 1996 ). This section was further divided into seven subsections based on the presence or absence of the basal bud scales and farina, the shape of the leaf margin, and the type of hair ( Smith and Fletcher 1944 ).…”

“…This genus contains ca 500 species (Hu and Kelso 1996, Richards 2002), of which 92% have distylous populations and only 45 species have monomorphic populations (Mast et al 2006). During the last decade, although more than a dozen new species of Primula were reported (Hu and Hao 2011, Wu et al 2013, 2019, Xu et al 2014a, b, 2015a, b, 2016a, b, c, 2017a, b, 2019, Yang et al 2017, Ju et al 2018, Yuan et al 2018, Sun et al 2020), there were only three homostylous species, i.e. P. gracilituba C.M.…”
