Pseudorhabdosynochus regiusn. sp. (Monogenea, Diplectanidae) from the mottled grouperMycteroperca rubra(Teleostei) in the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Atlantic

Abstract: Pseudorhabdosynochus regius n. sp. is described from the gills of the mottled grouper Mycteroperca rubra caught off Senegal, Tunisia and Libya (type-locality: off Dakar, Senegal). The species is distinguished from its congeners by the structure of its sclerotised vagina (length 26–35 μm), which exhibits a trumpet in continuity with the primary canal, a straight primary canal, and primary and secondary chambers included in a common sclerotised mass along the primary canal. The species is also characterised by s… Show more

“…Recent studies have shown that the biodiversity of monogeneans of marine fish in the southern part of the Mediterranean is far from being completely known (Chaabane et al, 2015(Chaabane et al, , 2016a(Chaabane et al, , b, 2017Chaari et al, 2016;Kheddam et al, 2016;Boudaya & Neifar, 2016;Ayadi et al, 2017). In the course of a parasitological study of monogeneans of sparid fishes off the Algerian coast, we collected representatives of an undescribed species of Microcotyle on the gills of Pagrus caeruleostictus.…”

“…Since sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) have proven reliable for distinguishing monogenean species [12] [13], we provide new sequences for both Microcotyle species. This paper is part of a project on the monogeneans of the south shores of the Mediterranean Sea [13][14][15][16].…”

“…After this date, 25 more species were described. The species of Pseudorhabdosynochus mostly parasitize fish belonging to Epinephelus and have been described from different regions of the world [ 1 , 2 , 6 – 12 , 17 , 19 – 23 ].…”
