Quebecius quebecensis (Whiteaves), a porolepiform crossopterygian (Pisces) from the Late Devonian of Quebec, Canada

Abstract: Quebecius quebecensis (Whiteaves 1889) is a porolepiform crossopterygian related to Glyptolepis. A large nariodal, a large tabular, a separate intertemporal, and a large fused nasosupraorbital are features of Quebecius that characterize it as a porolepiform. The small size of the operculum, median extrascapular larger than the lateral one, small lower squamosals, and deep maxilla are additional features separating Quebecius from Glyptolepis. As in Glyptolepis, the median fins are not lobed. The pectoral fin po… Show more

“…The suture between the anterior and posterior lateral rostrals is elongate and s-curved, and passes through an elongate opening which probably represents the anterior external nostril. A similar pattern of lateral rostral bones and nostrils is preserved in a specimen of Glyptolepis, UMZC GN1005, and is also present in Qwbecius (Schultze & Arsenault, 1987) and in the holoptychiid described as Puruglyptolepis by Vorobyeva (1987). The posterior lateral rostral corresponds topographically to, and is presumably homologous with, the small 'nariodal' of Holoptychius Uarvik, 1972).…”

“…Quebecius Schultze, 1973, first described as an onychodontid, was later re-assessed as a porolepiform (Schultze & Arsenault 1987;Cloutier & Schultze 1996). Onychodontids are mainly represented in the fossil record by many occurrences of isolated teeth in Devonian and Carboniferous strata (Schultze 1973).…”
