Salmonella biofilms program innate immunity for persistence in Caenorhabditis elegans

Abstract: The adaptive in vivo mechanisms underlying the switch in Salmonella enterica lifestyles from the infectious form to a dormant form remain unknown. We employed Caenorhabditis elegans as a heterologous host to understand the temporal dynamics of Salmonella pathogenesis and to identify its lifestyle form in vivo. We discovered that Salmonella exists as sessile aggregates, or in vivo biofilms, in the persistently infected C. elegans gut. In the absence of in vivo biofilms, Salmonella killed the host more rapidly b… Show more

“…S. Typhimurium contains six OmpR binding sites upstream of the csgD transcriptional start site, one of which is reported to have an inhibitory effect on csgD expression (159). In Salmonella, OmpR also regulates the SsrA/B two-component system (112,113) and the RR SsrB non-canonically activates csgD in the absence of phosphorylation by derepressing H-NS (183)(184)(185).…”

“…The ΔyjiY sup treated WT cells showed signi cantly less invasion in Int407 cells. It was recently proposed that Salmonella persist in C. elegans gut by forming bio lm 38 . ΔyjiY supernatant treated WT cells showed a concomitant reduction in colonization in worms gut, suggesting an in vivo bio lm defect.…”
