Scutellaria baicalensis – a small plant with large pro-health biological activities

Abstract: Scutellaria baicalensis, known also as Huang-Qin is a traditional Chinese plant used in medicine for at least 2000 years. The plant is widely distributed in Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Russia, and is listed in Chinese Pharmacopoeia, European Pharmacopoeia and British Pharmacopoeia. The interest in Huang-Qin results from various biological activities which are primarily related to secondary plants metabolites consisting of flavonoids, phenolic compounds and terpenes. “…Menthol and pulegone are cited within this list. Despite this potent anti-inflammatory action, only recent works explore the potential analgesic actions of terpenes ( Guimarães et al, 2013 ; Yang et al, 2019a , 2019b ; Perri et al, 2020 ; Bai et al, 2021 ; Wojtunik-Kulesza et al, 2021 ). Therefore, in the present study, we hypothesized that pulegone might have potent analgesic action on peripheral painful inflammatory sensitization, and tested its in vitro anti-inflammatory effect and cytotoxicity and its in vivo anti-hyperalgesic effects in the Freund’s Complete Adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory pain model.…”
