Serratia marcescens SCH909 as reservoir and source of genetic elements related to wide dissemination of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms

Abstract: Serratia marcescens SCH909 is a multidrug resistant strain isolated in 1988 harbouring three class 1 integrons. We wondered if these integrons were retained over time and if there were other antimicrobial resistant determinants contributing to its multidrug resistant profile. Genomic analysis showed a fourth multidrug resistance integron, a Tn7 transposon with dfrA1-sat2-ybeA-ybfA-ybfB-ybgA gene cassettes in the variable region. Insertion sequences were involved in the genesis of novel composite transposons in… Show more

“…Plant-and insectassociated factors, by contrast, tend to be located on GIs. Their role in shaping the genome of S. marcescens was linked to the emergence of MDR (multidrug-resistant) phenotypes (Mataseje et al, 2014;Gambino et al, 2021). Of particular note, Serratia sp.…”

“…The plasmid paadB from the E. coli TOP10::paadB strain was used for the transformation assays ( Table 1 ). The aadB gene cassette from S. marcescens SCH909 ( Gambino et al., 2021 ) was subcloned from a pCR2.1TOPO vector (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, CA) into the commercial vector pACYC184; paadB is resistant to chloramphenicol due to the background of its vector and to gentamicin due to the Pc promoter contained upstream the aadB gene cassette ( Gambino et al., 2021 ).…”
