Solanum paranense Extracts and Solanine Present Anti‐Inflammatory Activity in an Acute Skin Inflammation Model in Mice

Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the S. paranense crude extract, S. paranense alkaloid fraction, and solanine alkaloid. These samples reduce the croton oil-induced ear edema in a dose-dependent manner and a maximum inhibition of 81%, 98%, and 80% in the doses of 1.0, 0.73, and 0.37 mg/ear, respectively. Moreover, the samples inhibit the MPO activity with an inhibition maximum of 51%, 40%, and 46% in the doses of 1.0, 0.73, and 0.37 mg/ear, respectively. Similar results wer… Show more

“…In line with these findings, α‐solanine exhibits various biological effects, including anti‐inflammatory, 20–22 anti‐pulmonary arterial hypertension, 23 anti‐fungal 24 and anti‐tumour activities 25–27 . Notably, α‐solanine can inhibit pro‐inflammatory mediators, including IL‐1β, by inactivating NF‐κB signalling, thereby exerting an anti‐inflammatory effect in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced inflammation of macrophages and animal models 20–22 . It also inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (Mmps) activities by blocking p65 nuclear translocation, thus impeding the migration and invasion of human melanoma cells 28 .…”

“…18 A previous study has demonstrated rational potato administration, such as boiled potato peeling water, could effectively relieve pain and swelling to improve arthritis by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines expression. 19 In line with these findings, α-solanine exhibits various biological effects, including anti-inflammatory, [20][21][22] antipulmonary arterial hypertension, 23 anti-fungal 24 and anti-tumour activities. “…Solanine, an active glycoalkaloid, was evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity in the croton-oil-induced skin-inflammation model. The alkaloidal fraction containing solanine showed 80% percentage inhibition to reduce ear edema in swiss mice and thus showed anti-inflammatory action [ 141 ]. Solasodine at doses of 5, 30, and 75 mg/kg can also produce anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting arachidonic acid, cyclo-oxygenase (COX), and the 5-lipoxygenase pathway, which ultimately reduces inflammation in carrageenan-induced paw edema [ 142 ].…”

“…Among all the plants that are available in nature lamiaceae members, plants like Molucella laevis, Nepeta cataria, Vitex agnus, Origanum dictamnus and Mentha piperata were considered as major medicinal plants with a lot of medical applications [4][5][6] . So in this study the above plants were extracted with ethanol and the extracts were compared for the anti-in lammatory activity [7,8].…”
