Littleseed canarygrass (Phalaris minor Retz.), a troublesome weed of wheat in India, has evolved multiple herbicide resistance across three modes of action: photosynthesis at the photosystem II site A, acetyl-coA carboxylase (ACCase), and acetolactate synthase inhibition.The multiple herbicide-resistant (MHR) populations had a low level of sulfosulfuron resistance but a high level of resistance to clodinafop and fenoxaprop (ACCase inhibitors). Some of the populations had GR50 (50% growth reduction) values for clodinafop that were 11.7-fold greater than that of the most susceptible population.The clodinafop-resistant populations also showed a higher level of cross-resistance to fenoxaprop (fop group) but a low level of cross-resistance to pinoxaden (den group). Although clodinafop and pinoxaden are from two different chemical families (fop and den groups), their same site of action is responsible for cross-resistance behavior. The populations that were resistant to four groups of herbicides (phenylureas, sulfonylurea, aryloxyphenoxypropionate, and phenylpyrazolin) were susceptible to the triazine (metribuzin and terbutryn) and dinitroaniline (pendimethalin) herbicides.The P. minor populations that were resistant to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate and phenylurea herbicides were effectively controlled by the sulfonylurea herbicide, sulfosulfuron. In the fields infested with P. minor that was resistant to clodinafop, a sulfosulfuron application (25 g ha -1 ) increased the wheat yield by 99.2% over that achieved using the recommended rate of clodinafop (60 g ha -1 ). However, the evolution of multiple resistance against the four groups is a threat to wheat production.To prevent the spread of MHR P. minor populations, as well as the extension of multiple resistance to new chemicals, concerted efforts in developing and implementing a sound, integrated weed management program are needed.The integrated approach, consisting of crop and herbicide rotation with cultural and mechanical weed control tactics, should be considered as a long-term resistance management strategy that will help to sustain wheat productivity and farmers' income.

Populations of eastern black nightshade suspected of being resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors have been reported since 1999 in different locations in Ontario, Canada. This event has threatened the use of ALS inhibitors for control of this species. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the spectrum of resistance to different ALS-inhibiting herbicides and to examine the effectiveness of alternative modes of action herbicides. Growth room experiments were conducted to determine the response to imazethapyr and atrazine in seven suspected ALS inhibitor– resistant populations. One resistant and one susceptible population were further characterized for their response to ALS inhibitors and chloroacetamides. Seven populations were able to survive imazethapyr at 100 g ai/ha, while there was no resistance to atrazine. Compared to a susceptible (S) population, resistant (R) population SOLPT 1 had 726-, 31-, 6-, and 4-fold resistance to postemergence (POST) applied imazethapyr, imazamox, primisulfuron, and flumetsulam, respectively. Preemergence (PRE) application of imazethapyr, flumetsulam, cloransulam, nicosulfuron, prosulfuron, and rimsulfuron did not provide control of the R population, whereas they totally controlled the S population. The chloroacetamide herbicides metolachlor, dimethenamid, and flufenacet all provided at least 90% control of both R and S populations when applied PRE at the recommended field rates. The ALS inhibitors will not provide adequate control of these resistant populations, but acceptable control could be achieved with chloroacetamides or with atrazine.

Des sétaires vertes (Setaria viridis) présumées résistantes aux inhibiteurs de l'acétolactate synthase (ALS) ont été identifiées en 1999 au Wisconsin, É.-U., dans un champ de soja (Glycine max) issu d'un semis direct. La résistance aux herbicides imidazolinone et sulfonylurée a été caractérisée au niveau de la plante entière et de celui des enzymes. Ces sétaires vertes au stade trois à quatre feuilles étaient respectivement 1020, 53 et 6,5 fois plus résistantes à l'imazethapyr, à l'imazamox et au nicosulfuron que les sétaires sensibles. L'ALS in vivo était respectivement 1300 et 1,7 fois plus résistante à l'imazethapyr et au nicosulfuron. Three- to four-leaf stage green foxtail plants were 1020, 53, and 6.5-fold resistant to imazethapyr, imazamox, and nicosulfuron, respectively, compared to susceptible plants. In vivo ALS was 1300 and 1.7-fold resistant to imazethapyr and nicosulfuron, respectively.
