Third Prize: Comparison of Radical Nephrectomy, Laparoscopic Microwave Thermotherapy, Cryotherapy, and Radiofrequency Ablation for Destruction of Experimental VX-2 Renal Tumors in Rabbits

Abstract: Carcinomatosis occurred most frequently in animals treated with microwave thermotherapy, followed by radiofrequency ablation, and lastly cryoablation. The simple act of piercing a highly aggressive tumor can result in local spread. More disconcerting, and less well understood, is why certain ablative modalities appear to increase the rate of intraperitoneal spread.

“…In several ablate and resect studies performed in animal models [24][25][26][27][28][29], pathological and histological examinations of the renal coagulation lesion induced via RFA were carried out. On gross examination, the coagulation necrosis is blanched, well-circumscribed and of yellowish-white colour.…”

“…Only one study, to our knowledge, has evaluated MWA, RFA, and cryoablation together. Eichel and coworkers [13] compared these therapies in an experimental renal tumor model in rabbits. They reported that carcinomatosis occurred more often in animals treated with MWA, followed by RFA, then cryoablation [13].…”

“…Eichel and coworkers [13] compared these therapies in an experimental renal tumor model in rabbits. They reported that carcinomatosis occurred more often in animals treated with MWA, followed by RFA, then cryoablation [13]. They speculated that the higher rates of carcinomatosis found in the MWA and RFA groups may be related to the boiling effect after puncture with the needle probe compared with the freezing of the cancer cells that takes place in cryoablation [13].…”
