“I thought you were okay”: Participatory Design with Young Adults to Fight Multiparty Privacy Conflicts in Online Social Networks

Abstract: Although sharing multimedia content on online social networks (OSNs) has many benefits, publishing photos or videos of other people-without obtaining permission-can cause multiparty privacy conflicts (MPCs). Early studies developed technical solutions and dissuasive approaches to address MPCs. However, none of these studies involved, in the design process, the OSN users who have experienced MPCs. Hence, they possibly overlooked the valuable experiences these individuals have accrued. To fill this gap, we recru… Show more

“…These conflicts involve publishing photos or videos of others without having permission to do so, usually sharing this content on social media. Again, the problem often arises among known others-an individual has a friend or loved one who decides to share their material online [17]. In this case, because much of the focus is on social media, multiple parties are involved in both the sharing and viewing of the content.…”

“…The relevance of considering users' needs in the design of practical solutions for preventing online abuses is highlighted in [67]. According to the authors, many studies concerning dissuasive strategies and technical solutions for mitigating non-consensual sharing do not place the user at the heart of the design process.…”

“…Communication is vital to resolving conflicts [40]. Other studies suggest using mediators during conflicts; research should propose and test how mediators could be used in the cloud [44]. Prior efforts in other domains have focused on using conversational agents [12,17,33] and explainable and value-based AI methods [41,42].…”
