Wadaiko Performance Enhances Synchronized Motion of Mentally Disabled Persons

Abstract: People with mental disabilities tend to lack communication skills and have difficulty with interpersonal relationships. Interpersonal communication skills were examined in two people with Down Syndrome with regard to playing wadaiko (Japanese drum). Motion analysis compared single play and two-person play in which one participant was more skillful than the other. The effect of wadaiko play was quantified using two different methodologies: motion delay and hit-timing analysis and visual analog-scale (VAS) ratin… Show more

“…Similarly, Pepin and Stagnitti in 2012 showed that play therapy had positive effects on Creativity of intervened children. In several independent studies, authors found that play therapy promotes self-confidence and reduces anxiety and depression ( Mizuno & Sakuma, 2013 ; Seifert & Kollbrunner, 2005 ; Kuipers & Clemens, 1998 ).…”

“…Salivary OT can be measured in human saliva, suggesting that it may be a reliable biomarker [ 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ]. Therefore, we examined whether maltreated school-aged children exhibited changes in OT concentrations during educational sessions based on Japanese Taiko group drumming ( Supplementary Figure S1 ) [ 47 ]. In this study, we measured salivary OT concentrations in children before and after recital or practice drumming sessions and compared them with those in free play sessions.…”

“…[22][23][24][25] The relaxation effect of light stimulation used with classical music offers remarkable opportunities. [26][27][28] The present research was expected to expand the range of such studies. Summarizing the above findings, photo-acoustic stimulation applying sound effects or classical music was a reasonable solution for testing the method on people living with Down syndrome.…”
