Weight of Evidence: Participatory Methods and Bayesian Updating to Contextualize Evidence Synthesis in Stakeholders’ Knowledge

Abstract: Mixed methods research is well-suited to grapple with questions of what counts as valid knowledge across different contexts and perspectives. This article introduces Weight of Evidence as a transformative procedure for stakeholders to interpret, expand on and prioritize evidence from evidence syntheses, with a focus on engaging populations historically excluded from planning and decision making. This article presents the procedure’s five steps using pilot data on perinatal care of immigrant women in Canada, en… Show more

“…Supported by a specialist librarian, we will conduct a scoping review of quantitative and qualitative studies of factors associated with ASRH outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to a standard reporting of the review, we will create a fuzzy cognitive map (see as follows) of factors related to ASRH outcomes, marking the strength of associations as odds ratios or regression coefficients, and compare the literature map with stakeholder-created maps [ 62 , 64 , 65 ].…”

“…We contrasted the scoping review map with stakeholder perspectives to make sense of published evidence in the experience of local stakeholders. 24 The shared FCM format highlights similarities and differences between maps and the eventual combination of the resulting knowledge networks.…”

“…Dion’s Weight of Evidence is a procedure for stakeholders to interpret, expand on and prioritise findings from evidence syntheses. 24 We adapted this method by summarising the scoping review evidence as a fuzzy cognitive map with operator-independent weights based on Harris’ discourse analysis. As described elsewhere, traditional midwives and intercultural researchers generated cognitive maps of their knowledge of factors affecting maternal health in Indigenous communities.…”

“…In the first article in this issue, Dion et al (2022) with affiliations in health sciences have introduced Weight of Evidence as a transformative procedure to contextualize evidence in the understanding of relevant stakeholders. Through this procedure, stakeholders can interpret, expand upon, and prioritize evidence from synthesis, and inform service improvements and program evaluation that can refine syntheses.…”
