Iatrogenic Factors Affecting the Periodontium: An Overview

Abstract: The principal reason of gingival inflammation is bacterial plaque, along with other predisposing factors. These predisposing factors are calculus, malocclusion, faulty restorations, complications associated with orthodontic therapy, self- inflicted injuries, use of tobacco & radiation therapy. The contributing factors to gingival inflammation & periodontal destruction are deficient dental restorations and prosthesis. Inadequate dental procedures that add to the weakening of the periodontal tissues are referred… Show more

“…During such orthodontic treatments, the periodontal tissues often sustain reversible injury (3). Full rectification of the dentition is only achieved following extensive treatment, due to various factors that may affect a positive outcome (4)(5)(6). Despite the development of advanced orthodontic techniques and appliances (7), the underlying mechanisms of orthodontic tooth movement remain unclear.…”

“…Inadequate dental restorative procedures that contribute to gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction are called iatrogenic placretentive factors. Among the most common iatrogenic placretentive factors are overhanging interproximal restorations and poorly adapted prosthetic fixed structures [2,3,4].…”

“…6 During dental and periodontal treatment, various instruments, namely rotary instruments or vibrating hand, electrosurgical units, and lasers come into contact with the oral cavity, and improper use or this application can result in trauma to the gingivallesion. 7 When a doctor or other health worker tries to cure or alleviate or treat a patient's health problems, it will produce psychological and functional disorders, diseases and other disorders so this is what is meant by iatrogenic. Procedural errors can be avoided by a doctor by relying on his knowledge, intuition, and patience during treatment.…”
