Ice-Ocean Exchange Processes in the Jovian and Saturnian Satellites

Abstract: A growing number of satellites in the outer solar system likely have global oceans beneath their outer icy shells. While the presence of liquid water makes these ocean worlds compelling astrobiological targets, the exchange of heat and materials between the deep interior and the surface also plays a critical role in promoting habitable environments. In this article, we combine geophysical, geochemical, and geological observations of the Jovian satellites Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto as well as the Saturnian … Show more

“…Thermal convection in icy satellite oceans is expected in order to efficiently transport heat from the deeper interior that arises primarily from radiogenic and tidal heating in the mantle (e.g., Soderlund et al, 2020). Using global convection models in combination with rotating convection theory, Soderlund et al (2014) and Soderlund (2019) predicted the ocean of Europa to have large-scale flows organized into three zonal jets with retrograde (westward) flow at low latitudes and prograde (eastward) flow at high latitudes (Figure 8a).…”

“…Another reason justifying the recent growth in robotic biomimicry research is space exploration. Such an exploration is not only oriented to Mars, but it actually includes the sub-surface oceans of Europa and Enceladus and other icy moons as equivalents to deep-sea terrestrial environments [ 38 , 53 , 79 , 80 ]. Proposed applications plan to use vectors to carry biomimicking probes for their delivery into specific terrestrial, atmospheric and aquatic environments, orienting biomimicking research toward the design of the structural hardware and toward the emulation of specific behavioral aspects.…”

“…There has, however, been significant interest in salt incorporation at the ice‐ocean interface, for example, Soderlund et al. (2020). Complex dynamical processes in the mushy layer at the interface leads to the effective desalination of the ice and significantly reduces the salt content (Buffo et al., 2020, 2021; Wells et al., 2019).…”
