Ice‐wedge casts and relict polygonal patterned ground in North‐East Iowa, USA

Abstract: Sediment‐filled wedges and associated polygonal patterned ground occur in pre‐Illinoian sediments in north‐east Iowa. A total of 183 vertical to near‐vertical wedge‐shaped bodies of sand have been observed at 12 sites in Black Hawk County, Iowa, and 80 of them were examined in detail. The wedges average 105cm in width at their tops and about 190cm in depth. Infilling material is mostly sand, with pockets of silt, silty sand, and gravelly sand. Slump and subsidence features were also noted in some wedges. Loamy… Show more

The presence of ice-wedge casts (Péwé, 1983;Johnson, 1990;Walters, 1994) and extensive frost-shattered colluvial and solifluction deposits (Bettis and Kemmis, 1992;Bettis, 1994;Mason and Knox, 1997) suggest the significant impact of fullglacial climates on upland and valley-margin landscapes beyond the glacial margin. Regional accumulation of Peoria Loess began on stable landsurfaces between 31.2 ka (26,000 14 C yr B.P.)…”

“…dated polygons between 6.1 to 12.2 m in diameter (Péwé, 1959). Ice-wedge casts described in Alaska (Péwé, 1962(Péwé, , 1969, Wyoming (Mears, 1981), Illinois (Johnson, 1990), Iowa (Walters, 1994), Nebraska (Wayne, 1991), and Montana and Alberta (Karlstrom, 1990) are typically 0.01 to 6 m wide at the top and 1 to 10 m deep, with associated polygons from 1 to 40 m in diameter (Table 3). The depth-width ratio of the Flagstaff area wedges also is higher (4:1 to 6:1) than is typical of sand wedges or ice-wedge casts (1.4:1 to 2:1).…”
