Ichnofauna from coastal meandering channel systems (Upper Cretaceous Tremp Formation, South-Central Pyrenees, Spain): delineating the fluvial-tidal transition

Abstract: The Upper Cretaceous “redbeds” of the lower Tremp Formation (South-Central Pyrenees, Spain) contains an ichnofauna consisting of Taenidium barretti, Taenidium bowni, Loloichnus isp., Arenicolites isp., Planolites isp., and Palaeophycus isp. This ichnofauna occurs in deposits formed in tide-influenced meander loops and their associated overbank mudflats. Evaluation of the taphonomic controls on the Tremp ichnofauna shows that (1) two morphotypes of Taenidium barretti are controlled by the substrate consistence,… Show more

“…The widespread occurrence of non-reworked planktonic foraminiferal associations and autogenic glauconite grains within the whole Lower Red Unit, document landward-directed flows, which were interpreted to be tidal in origin by D ıez-Canseco et al (2014). The ichnofauna of the channelized bodies documents sedimentation across the maximum salinity zone, with an abundance of Arenicolites and the establishment of a freshwater assemblage in the central and uppermost part of the unit, respectively (D ıez-Canseco et al, 2016).…”

“…Following deposition, the upper parts of splay lobes were reworked by waves and colonized by burrowers, as evidenced by the occurrence of wave ripple strata and burrows at the top of sandstone. Bioturbation observed as paired circular openings at the top of sandstone may correspond to U‐shaped or Y‐shaped burrows, which are common in marginal‐marine environments (Buatois & Mangano, 2011), as similarly occurs in the deposits of the fluvial–tidal transition in the Upper Cretaceous Tremp Formation, in the Pyrenees (Díez‐Canseco et al ., 2014, 2016), for example. Splay lobes underwent subaerial exposure, as indicated by the occurrence of edaphic features, as similarly reported in other ancient deposits (Yeste et al ., 2020), as well as by the local occurrence of dinosaur tracks at the top of sandstone.…”

“…The recognition of tidally generated sedimentary structures and marine fossils suggests a more complex marginal-marine setting. Deposition in the fluvial-tidal transition of a tide-dominated delta has been proposed (Díez-Canseco et al 2014, 2016). Towards the west, the Lower Red Unit is replaced laterally by the marginal-marine deposits of the Aren Formation and the Grey Unit of the Tremp Formation (Nagtegaal et al 1983; Díaz-Molina et al 2007; Riera et al 2009) (Fig.…”
