Modelling is central to many disciplines in engineering and the natural and social sciences. A wide variety of modelling languages and tools have been proposed along the years, traditionally for static environments such as desktops and laptops. However, the availability of increasingly powerful mobile devices makes it possible to profit from their embedded sensors and components (e.g. camera, microphone, GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope) for modelling. This has promoted a new range of modelling tools specially designed for their use in mobility. Such tools open the door to modelling in dynamic scenarios that go beyond the capabilities of traditional desktop tools. For example, modelling in mobility can be useful to design smart factories on-site, or to create models of hiking routes while walking along the routes, among many other scenarios. In this paper, we report on a systematic mapping study to identify the state of the art and trends in modelling on mobile devices. The study covers both research papers and modelling apps from the Android and iOS stores. From this analysis, we derive a classification for mobile modelling tools along three orthogonal dimensions, discuss current gaps, and propose avenues for further research.

Robots are becoming interactive and robust enough to be adopted outside laboratories and in industrial scenarios as well as interacting with humans in social activities. However, the design of engaging robotbased applications requires the availability of usable, flexible and accessible development frameworks, which can be adopted and mastered by researchers and practitioners in social sciences and adult end users as a whole. This paper surveys Visual Programming Environments aimed at enabling a paradigm fostering the so-called End-User Development of applications involving robots with social capabilities. The focus of this article is on those Visual Programming Environments that are designed to support social research goals as well as to cater for professional needs of people not trained in more traditional text-based computer programming languages. This survey excludes interfaces aimed at supporting expert programmers, at allowing industrial robots to perform typical industrial tasks (such as pick and place operations), and at teaching children how to code. After having performed a systematic search, sixteen programming environments have been included in this survey. Our goal is two-fold: first, to present these software tools with their technical features and Authoring Artificial Intelligence modeling approaches, and second, to present open challenges in the development of Visual Programming Environments for end users and social researchers, which can be informative and valuable to the community. The results show that the most recent such tools are adopting distributed and Component-Based Software Engineering approaches and web technologies. However, few of them have been designed to enable the independence of end users from high-tech scribes. Moreover, findings indicate the need for (i) more objective and comparative evaluations, as well as usability and user experience studies with real end users; and (ii) validations of these tools for designing applications aimed at working "in-the-wild" rather than only in laboratories and structured settings.

Nowadays, we live in an interconnected ecosystem of heterogeneous services which are available anytime and anywhere. Although these services can be used individually, their combined usage provides end-users with real added value. Nevertheless, existing mashup solutions are not fully targeted to end-users. Indeed, these solutions require technical knowledge to deal with the technological heterogeneity in which they are offered. The key limitation of current mashup solutions is their general-purpose nature, which privileges expressive power over intuitiveness. As the reason for mashups was the desire of end-users to build applications responding to their situational needs, we propose a domain-specific mashup approach that "speaks the language of the user." The article presents (1) a domain-specific visual language that allows end-users to easily build mashup-based compositions, (2) a mashup schema which is a gateway between service implementations and end-users, providing a high-level description in order to hide technological issues when including services in composition; and (3) a configuration module that executes the travel mashup query and generates a personalized trip planning. The results of a user study confirm that domain-specific mashup tools lower the entry barrier to mashup development.
