ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Arteriviridae 2021

Abstract: The family Arteriviridae comprises enveloped RNA viruses with a linear, positive-sense genome of approximately 12.7 to 15.7 kb. The spherical, pleomorphic virions have a median diameter of 50–74 nm and include eight to eleven viral proteins. Arteriviruses infect non-human mammals in a vector-independent manner. Infections are often persistent and can either be asymptomatic or produce overt disease. Some arteriviruses are important veterinary pathogens while others infect particular species of wild rodents or A… Show more

“…The etiologic agent, PRRS virus (PRRSV), is an enveloped single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus classified within the order Nidovirales, family Arteriviridae. The current family Arteriviridae is further specified into six subfamilies, including Variarterivirinae, Zealarterivirinae, Equarterivirinae, Simarterivirinae, Crocarterivirinae, and Heroarterivirinae [2,3]. The viral genome of PRRSV is approximately 15 kb in length and comprises at least 10 open reading frames (ORFs).…”

“…Reproductive failure is characterized by abortion, mummified fetuses, weak birth and stillbirth, postweaning pneumonia, increased mortality, and growth retardation of young pigs [3,5]. The causative agent, PRRSV, is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus (~15 kb) that is classified to the Betaaarterivirus by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), belonging to the order Nidovirales, the Arteriviridae family [6][7][8][9]. The PRRSV genome encodes at least 10 open reading frames (ORFs) consisting of ORF1a, ORF1b, ORF2a, ORF2b, ORF3, ORF4, ORF5a, ORF5, ORF6, and ORF7 [10].…”

“…Based on sequence analysis by the ICTV, the two genotypes of PRRSV, PRRSV1 and PRRSV2, are classified into two distinct viral species as Betaaarterivirus suid 1 and Betaaarterivirus 2 [9]. High levels of genetic variability exist within PRRSVs, which is caused by mutations and recombination among PRRSV strains [19].…”

“…PRRSV belongs to the genus Betaarterivirus, family Arteriviridae, and order Nidovirales [8,9]. PRRSV is currently classified into two distinct species: Betaarterivirus suid 1 (PRRSV-1) and Betaarterivirus suid 2 (PRRSV-2) [9].…”

“…PRRSV belongs to the genus Betaarterivirus, family Arteriviridae, and order Nidovirales [8,9]. PRRSV is currently classified into two distinct species: Betaarterivirus suid 1 (PRRSV-1) and Betaarterivirus suid 2 (PRRSV-2) [9]. Both PRRSVs have been circulating in China for decades, and have caused substantial economic losses in the Chinese pig industry.…”
