ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Caulimoviridae

Abstract: Caulimoviridae is a family of non-enveloped reverse-transcribing plant viruses with non-covalently closed circular dsDNA genomes of 7.1–9.8 kbp in the order Ortervirales. They infect a wide range of monocots and dicots. Some viruses cause economically important diseases of tropical and subtropical crops. Transmission occurs through insect vectors (aphids, mealybugs, leafhoppers, lace bugs) and grafting. Activation of infectious endogenous viral elements occurs in Musa balbisiana, Petunia hybrida and Nicotiana … Show more

“…However, these two sequences share 60% to 78% of identity with RT‐RNase H domains of the eight available complete genomes of yam badnaviruses. Because 80% of identity in RT‐RNAse H domain is the threshold for the demarcation of species within the Badnavirus genus (Teycheney et al, 2020 ), these sequences belong to a yam badnavirus species for which no complete genome has yet been sequenced. Further studies must be implemented in order to characterize this species, which seems to specifically infect yam crops in Africa.…”

“…The production of blueberry has now been expanded in other parts of the world, to the point that North American production accounts for less than half of global production [125]. The rapid growth in blueberry production around the world has led to the increase in foreign trade due to the exchange of BRRV, the causal agent for red ringspot disease in blueberry, is a paratretrovirus that belongs to the genus Soymovirus in the family Caulimoviridae [44,119]. BRRV has an 8.3 kb circular double-stranded DNA genome encapsidated in a nonenveloped, icosahedral particle with a diameter of 42-46 nm that can exist as a virion or form inclusion bodies in the nucleus or cytoplasm, respectively [45,120].…”

“…Seventy-two complete genome sequences from viruses in eight genera of family Caulimoviridae (Badnavirus, Caulimovirus, Cavemovirus, Petuvirus, Rosadnavirus, Solendovirus, Soymovirus, Tungrovirus; Teycheney et al, 2020) and in the tentative genus Florendovirus (Geering et al, 2014) served as queries. tBLASTx-based search was performed using default parameters (except E value of 10-5).…”
