Ideal Dimers of Gold Nanospheres for Precision Plasmonics: Synthesis and Characterization at the Single‐Particle Level for Identification of Higher Order Modes

Abstract: Ideal dimers comprising gold nanoparticles with a smooth surface and high sphericity are synthesized by a substrate-based assembly strategy with efficient cetyltrimethylammonium bromide removal. An unprecedented structural and plasmonic uniformity at the single-particle level is observed since inhomogeneities resulting from variations in gap morphology are eliminated. Single ideal dimers are analyzed by polarization-resolved dark-field scattering spectroscopy. Contributions from transverse as well as quadrupol… Show more

“…28,38 When the NSs within the clusters are closer to each other, a stronger degree of plasmon coupling can be expected, and higher order cluster modes appear at energies close to the single particle LSPR. These higher order cluster modes, which have been discussed in previous works, 28,38 can shift the peak to λ~560 nm. 22,39 The second region at higher wavelengths displays the most intense extinction peak and clearly red-shifts when increasing the lattice parameter of the assembly.…”

“…The Au/Au core/satellite nanoparticles comprise a positively charged 50 nm gold nanosphere (core) with a smooth surface (AuNSs), coated with the linker molecule MUTAB and the Raman reporter MMC, as well as negatively charged 30 nm gold nanoparticles (satellites) (AuNP) . The assemblies are stabilized by a PEG shell (HS‐PEG‐COOH) to avoid non–specific binding of the SERS nanotags to cells.…”
