Identification and biological activity of the volatile organic substances emitted by plants and insects II. Sesquiterpene composition of the native scent of leaves of the potatoSolanum tuberosum

Abstract: According to the literature [2, 3], C 6 and C 7 aliphatic alcohols and aldehydes and geraniol, linalool, caryophyllene, and terpineol have been isolated and identified from aqueous extracts of leaves of the potato Solanum tuberosum L. At the same time, it is known that the composition and structure of extractive substances differ substantially from the hydrocarbon components constituting the native scent of living plants [4].We have previously reported the identification of trans-caryophyllene as the main comp… Show more

“…-Myrcene, the major contributor of wormwood oil from the Republic of Bashkortostan, was also found in high amounts in mugworth oil from the same country (23). R-Phellandrene and -myrcene were not found in such a significant amount in other A. Vulgaris oils ( Table 3).…”

“…These particular sesquiterpenes have been noted to occur together in potato leaf VOCs. 17 Bourbonene and β-copaene are pheromones for the European birch aphid, 18 and aromadendrene has been reported to be an attractant for the Brazilian eucalyptus brown looper. 15 However, none of the noted sesquiterpenes has been implicated as possessing activity against NOW.…”

“…A. vulgaris synthesizes many bioactive compounds, such as terpenoids, sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoid glycosides, coumarins, carotenoids, resins, alkaloids, and polysaccharides. Essential oil (EO) makes a significant contribution to plant biological activity as well, and for that reason the chemical composition was a subject of many studies (and references cited therein). The most important and characteristic components of mugwort oils are α ‐, β ‐pinene, myrcene, phellandrene, cis ‐, trans ‐thujone, camphor, 1,8‐cineole, artemisia ketone, borneol, verbenone, caryophyllene and its oxide, isobornyl isobutyrate, artemisia alcohol, chrysanthenol, cis‐, trans ‐chrysanthenyl acetate, lyratol, α ‐humulene, davanone B, and elemol ( Table ).…”
