Identification and characterization of β-sitosterol target proteins

Abstract: β-Sitosterol is the most abundant plant sterol in the human diet. It is also the major component of several traditional medicines, including saw palmetto and devil’s claw. Although β-sitosterol is effective against enlarged prostate in human clinical trials and has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities, the mechanisms of action are poorly understood. Here, we report the identification of two new binding proteins for β-sitosterol that may underlie its beneficial effects.

“…Thereby, materials with moisturizing and anti-wrinkling activities are potential candidates to anti-aging ingredients in skincare formulations. Sito generally exists in human diet as well as many medicinal plants and possesses anti-cancer, antiinflammatory and analgesic activities (Lomenick et al 2015, Villaseñor et al 2002. Verm is a main characteristic component in T. vermicularis with physiological activities of anti-inflammatory and antipyretic (guo et al 2011, Crawford 2015).…”

“…It also has anti-inflammatory, analgesic properties, and reducing the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia in various animal models. [17] The HPTLC, as the advanced analytical technique, has the benefit of quick analysis as numerous samples can be run concurrently and ensuing quick comparison of phytochemical profiles. [18,19] This analytical technique used for the concurrent analysis of different constituents present in the A. indica plant material.…”

“…Also, anti-infective studies of Sassafras albidum and its bioactivity guided fractionation reported a sterol and fatty alcohol, 162 and 163 respectively [36] as promising antileishmanial compounds. 162 which differs from cholesterol at C24 position is believed to kill the parasite via an apoptosis mechanism involving DNA fragmentation, inhibition of inflammation cytokines and the activation of caspases [148,149]. Evaluating the suicidal action of active isolates from Pentalinon andrieuxii, 181 induced changes in immune responses particularly via necrosis and apoptosis characterized by increase in IL2 and IFN-γ which insinuates the control of pro-inflammatory cytokines by anti-inflammatory counterparts [150].…”
