Identification and genetic monitoring of mouse inbred strains using biochemical polymorphisms

Abstract: 53 inbred strains and substrains of mice from 3 institutes in The Netherlands were examined at 12 chromosome loci coding body protein-polymorphism (Es-1, Es-2, Es-3, Es-S, Gpi-1, Hbb, Id-1, Ldr-1, Mpi-1, Mup-1, pgm-1, Trf). The allelic variation at 7 loci could be detected simultaneously. Within each institute most strains showed a unique combination of alleles at the 12 loci involved. Some nominally similar (sub)strains showed allelic divergence. One strain showed allelic variation at 4 loci. These findings … Show more

“…In the past, most research workers have taken the authenticity of such strains on trust, but sometimes this trust is misplaced (Festing, 1974;Krog, 1976;Groen, 1977). Moreover, eyen if strains do not become genetically contaminated, errors in labelling when animals are transported could result in research workers inadvertently using the wrong animals.…”

“…Biochemical marker genes (Groen, 1977;Hoffman, 1978) are useful but their study is technically complicated and time-consuming. Skin grafting is sensitive for discovering whether a strain is inbred, but is clumsy as a means of strain identification: it also takes far too long (12-100 days) to get an answer.…”

“…Although the * Corresponding author. origin and genetic similarities of many American strains have been traced in detail (Potter & Klein, 1979;Staats, 1979;Roderick, Staats & Womack, 1981), fewer studies have been published for European strains, though Groen (1977) and Hilkens et al (1981) have published information on some of them. Nor have these strains been compared with those of American origin.…”

“…The genetic monitoring of rodent colonies demands the use of immunological and biochemical techniques (Groen, 1977;Hoffman, 1978;Festing & Totman, 1980). Many of these are costly, technically complicated and time consuming.…”
