Abstract Human pheromones have a role in regulating relationships, and apparently influence partner choice and mother-infant recognition. We analyzed the chemical content of volatiles from sweat patch samples from the para-axillary and nipple-areola regions of women during pregnancy and after childbirth. Solid phase microextraction (SPME) was used to extract the volatile compounds, which were then characterized and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). During pregnancy, women developed a distinctive pattern of five volatile compounds common to the para-axillary and nipple-areola regions (1-dodecanol, 1-1΄-oxybis octane, isocurcumenol, α-hexyl-cinnamic aldehyde, and isopropyl myristate). These compounds were absent outside pregnancy and had slightly different patterns in samples from the two body areas. Differentiation of the volatile patterns among pregnant women may help newborns to distinguish their own mothers.

Furanodiene (C 15 H 20 O), a pure compound isolated from Traditional Chinese medicine, Curcuma wenyujin, named Ezhu in Chinese, which structure was determined on the basis of NMR, MS and UV spectrum. In this study, we attempted to characterize in detail the signaling cascades resulted from furanodiene-induced apoptosis in human hepatoma HepG2 cells. Furanodiene inhibited HepG2 cell growth by causing cell cycle arrest at G 2 /M and inducing apoptosis as evidenced by DNA fragmentation assay. We found that furanodiene induced mitochondrial transmembrane depolarization, release of mitochondrial cytochrome c, activation of caspases-3 and the cleavage of PARP. The furanodiene mediated mitochondria-caspase apoptotic pathway also involved activation of p38 and inhibition of ERK mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. These results for the first time have identified the biological activity of furanodiene against HepG2 cells and provide rationales for further development of essential oil of Ezhu and its ingredients such as furanodiene on treatment of liver diseases.

The traditional extraction methods of natural products are often considered to be a bottleneck for most analytical procedures. In particular, they suffer from several limitations including high solvent consumption and prolonged extraction time. This review gives an overview of microwave‐assisted extraction and pressurized liquid extraction as clean and cheap procedures that can be used in routine analysis in a fast and automatic way. The influence of important parameters (e.g., temperature, pressure, nature of the solvent, and extraction time) on the extraction efficiency and characteristics of the extracted products is discussed and based on an overview of the recent literature related to plant materials. These two approaches should definitely be considered for fast and efficient extraction of active constituents from plant materials. Selected applications published during the past 10 years are given.
