Identification and quantitation of the actual active components in bamboo juice and its oral liquid by NMR and UPLC-Q-TOF-MS

Abstract: Bamboo juice is a traditional Chinese drink and herbal medicine, and bamboo juice oral liquids are widely sold for the treatment of cough and phlegm in China. In this study, 26 main compounds of bamboo juice (Phyllostachys edulis) were separated, precisely identified, and qualitative analysis using NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and quantitative analysis using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS (ultra-performance liquid chromatography with high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer), respectively. Potentially ha… Show more

“…Coupled with mass spectroscopy (MS), LC–MS is ideally suited for detecting and quantifying multi-components in complex plant extracts [ 52 ]. Based on our previous work on the chemical constituents of bamboo plants [ 38 , 53 , 54 , 55 ], 21 phenolic compounds were selected as the extraction targets in this research. The molecular structures of the target compounds are shown in Figure S3 .…”

“…The phenolic compounds, FF and HMF were identified and quantified, as described by the authors elsewhere [ 37 , 38 ], by employing an Agilent 6540 quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer using electron spray ionization (ESI-QTOF-MS) coupled to an Agilent 1290 ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) system equipped with a diode array detector (DAD) (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA, USA). The dried extracts were resuspended in 30% ( v / v ) methanol solution and filtered through a 0.2 μm hydrophilic membrane (Merck, Burlington, MA, USA) before injection into the UPLC-QTOF-MS.…”

“…The use of antimicrobial preservatives in SBOLs is still unreasonable. Considering the important role of SBOLs in daily Chinese life, these potentially harmful levels of antimicrobial preservatives represent a potential food safety problem 38 . It is suggested that the manufacturers should select the appropriate and effective antimicrobial agents and dosage in combination with the active ingredients, pH, packaging materials and other factors when formulating the product prescription.…”

“…At present, experts recommend FXZL for the treatment of people with thick phlegm or unpleasant phlegm in COVID‐19 disease 2 . However, the chemical composition has only been studied for single herbs, about 26 compounds were isolated from Succus Bambusae 3 ; more than 100 flavonoids, phenolics, and alkaloids have been identified from Houttuyniae herba 4 ; 80 chemicals were identified after multivariate statistical analysis in Pinelliae Rhizoma 5 ; about 100 chemical compounds including gingerols, essential oils, diarylheptanoids, have been isolated from Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens 6 ; some sesquiterpene glycosides and triterpene acids were gained from Eriobotryae Folium 7 ; and a total of 36 compounds were identified in Platycodonis Radix 8 . And the basis for FXZL has not been reported, which seriously affects the safety of the clinical application.…”
