Identification of artificial groundwater recharging zone using a GIS-based fuzzy logic approach: a case study in a coal mine area of the Damodar Valley, India

Abstract: The West Bokaro coalfield is a richest coalmining belt in the Damodar Valley, India. The extensive mining of the area has resulted in disruption of the groundwater availability in terms of both quantity and quality. This has led to a drinking water crisis, especially during the pre-monsoon period in the West Bokaro coalfield area. The characterization of the hydrogeological system and the artificial recharging of the aquifers might help to better manage the problem of the groundwater-level depletion. For this … Show more

“…The slope is an important parameter in hydrology, and it has its own significance in affecting the run-off, movement of surface water and potential infiltration [26]. In the case of groundwater resources management, slope plays a significant role in the movement of water and permitting the infiltration of water into the aquifer system [27,28]. The slope can be calculated in percent (0-100%) or in degree from horizontal (0-90 • ), and the velocity of water directly associated with the angle of slope and depth.…”

“…The very high lineament density was obtained in the central and north western part. Different methodologies were used for the purpose of mapping and locating the groundwater potential sectors [7], [8]. With these data, the weights of the individual thematic layer and ranking were fixed and added to the layers depending on their groundwater holding capacity using the IDW techniques.…”
