Identification of bioactives from Astragalus chinensis L.f. and their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative effects

Abstract: This work was designed to obtain the valuable compounds with antioxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory activities from . Ethyl acetate fraction obtained from L.f. had significant antioxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory activities. Subsequently, five single compounds were separated and purified, which were identified as formononetin (1), rhamnocitrin (2), calycosin (3), -daucosterol (4), rhamnocitrin-3---d-glucoside (5). The results displayed that formononetin and rhamnocitrin exhibite… Show more

“…The NO inhibition activities of AR have already been reported previously. 33 Moreover, formononetin, 34 calycosin, 35 and soyasaponin I 36 have been reported to significantly inhibit the NO production; therefore, the active ingredients of both AR and HR were considered. Ononin, 37 astragaloside IV, 38 and isoastragaloside I 39 in AR and indolelactic acid 40 and afromosin 41 in HR have also reported the function in the NO production inhibition, which may be related to the anti-inflammatory activity of AR and HR.…”

“…Astragalin was shown to be cytotoxic to cultured human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells, but not human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 [57]. It also decreased cell viability and increased apoptosis of cultured human lung cancer cell lines (A549 and H1299), but not the normal (BEAS-2B) lung cells [58]. The mechanism for its selectivity toward tumor versus normal cells is unknown, but anti-oxidants can inhibit the growth of tumor cells through cell cycle arrest or apoptosis via depletion of reactive oxygen species because their growth is dependent on H 2 O 2 [14].…”

“…Formononetin (FMN) is a bioactive compound, which is widely distributed in nature and has been reported to possess numerous pharmacological activities, including antitumor, oxygen free radical-scavenging, cell lipid peroxide-reducing and cholesterol-reducing effects (12)(13)(14)(15). In our preliminary experiments, it was demonstrated that, in a rat model, FMN could attenuate balloon-induced neointima formation and reduce platelet-derived growth factor (PdGF) levels…”
