Identification of biomarkers for bull fertility using functional genomics

Abstract: Prediction of bull fertility is critical for the sustainability of both dairy and beef cattle production. Even though bulls produce ample amounts of sperm with normal parameters, some bulls may still suffer from subpar fertility. This causes major economic losses in the cattle industry because using artificial insemination, semen from one single bull can be used to inseminate hundreds of thousands of cows. Although there are several traditional methods to estimate bull fertility, such methods are not sufficien… Show more

“…One of the key regulators of sperm motility -protein phosphatase type 2B (PP2B) - is inhibited by CYP. In a healthy state, PP2B activity gradually decreases as sperm proceed through the process of maturation from the caput epididymis to the cauda, where they become motile and ready for ejaculation ( 14 , 63 , 64 ). Indeed, the aim was to induce a further reduction of PP2B activity using a prescribed CYP concentration.…”

“…Transcriptomic investigations can assist veterinarians and breeders in early diagnosis and the implementation of focused treatment methods by identifying the biomarkers linked to reproductive diseases or inadequate fertility [ 72 ]. Transcriptomic research, by deciphering the complex gene expression profiles associated with critical reproductive processes, provides the path for the identification of genetic markers, breeding program optimization, and improved reproductive outcomes in poultry production [ 13 , 73 ].…”

“…However, a large percentage of beef cattle breeders continue to rely on natural mating systems as a reproductive management strategy for their herds [6]. Regardless of the adopted reproductive strategy, the reproductive performance of the bulls is an outstanding characteristic, as a single sire is responsible for mating with multiple cows [7]. Thus, the bulls' reproductive capacity directly impacts the cows' pregnancy rates and, consequently, the farm's overall productivity.…”
