Identification of cancer stem cell-like cells from human epithelial ovarian carcinoma cell line

Abstract: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play an important role in the development, invasion, and drug resistance of carcinoma, but the exact phenotype and characteristics of ovarian CSCs are still disputable. In this study, we identified cancer stem cell-like cells (CSC-LCs) and investigated their characteristics from the ovarian adenocarcinoma cell line 3AO. Our results showed that CSC-LCs were enriched in sphere-forming test and highly expressed CD44(+)CD24⁻. The spheres and CD24⁻ cells possessed strong tumorigenic ability… Show more

“…3AO was maintained in RPMI 1640 and 10% FBS as described previously. 45 The paclitaxel-resistant cell subline, SKOV3-TR30, was developed by treating parental SKOV3 cells with increased concentrations of paclitaxel and cultured in complete medium containing 30 nM paclitaxel as mentioned before.…”

“…This result is not consistent with a recently published study indicating the CD133 expression in tumorigenic ovarian cancer cells is heterogeneous [47] . Similarly, contradictory results have been obtained using CD24 for the characterization of ovarian CSCs [13,48] . Although the origin of CSCs has been debated for a long time, a common consensus on this issue has not been reached.…”
